Valentine's gifts that are not roses

Valentine's gifts do not have to be roses. On our shelves they can be a silver pendant, a stone heart, a small amethyst pendant or a Charlie Bear with a name of its own.

The silver pendant names include Peridot Faceted Small Pear Solid 925 Sterling Silver Pendant and Blue Topaz Small Pear Solid 925 Sterling Silver Pendant. Sterling silver is 92.5% silver by weight, with the rest usually copper.

Peridot is the gem variety of the mineral olivine, yellowish-green to olive, with hardness 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. Topaz is an aluminium silicate with hardness 8. Almost all blue topaz sold has been irradiated and heated to reach its colour.

The Sky Opal Oval Solid 925 Sterling Silver Pendant is the third of the three. Opal is a mineraloid of hydrated silica, appears in every colour, and has hardness 5 to 6.5.

A heart made of stone

Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony, which is microcrystalline quartz, with hardness 6.5 to 7. Jasper is an opaque, fine-grained quartz coloured by iron and other minerals, usually red, yellow, brown or green, with hardness 6.5 to 7.

Agate Fire Crystal Heart and Jasper Tiger Crystal Heart bring those stone names into heart shapes.

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, with hardness 7. The Amethyst Gemstone Heart Pendant for Peace keeps its full product name, while the stone itself is simply amethyst.

A bear, if they are that sort of person

Fire Elf Charlie Bears is a Charlie Bears piece with a small, fiery name. Charlie Bears was founded by Charlotte "Charlie" Morris and William Morris, and the first collection of 12 bears launched on 1 February 2006.

Most Charlie Bears characters are five-way jointed, meaning the head, both arms and both legs move. Goldenhands sells Charlie Bears at 30 George Street in Hastings Old Town.
