Gothic gifts and gothic decor: a plain guide

The gothic shelf has wall pieces, lamps, skulls, cats, spellbooks and small things with very serious little faces. Nemesis Now is a British company based in Stoke-on-Trent, founded in 2003.

Who makes them

Nemesis Now makes cold-cast resin figurines and giftware. The company describes its own products as hand-painted.

Nemesis Now also makes licensed artist ranges, though the shop does not name the artists. That leaves plenty to talk about on the object itself: a skull, a cat, a wall plaque, a lamp, a trinket box with a lid.

Goldenhands stocks Nemesis Now gothic and fantasy figurines, trinket boxes, journals, incense holders and purses.

For the wall, the shelf and the desk

Wolf Moon Dark Gothic Magical Wall Hanging Plaque belongs on the wall rather than a desk. Nevermore Lamp brings a raven name into the lighting corner.

The shelf pieces have their own small cast. Apothecary Skull Figurine has the old shop-counter word "apothecary" in its name, while Count Archibald Steampunk Top Hat Skull sounds as if he has dressed for the occasion.

Salems Spells Witches Familiar Black Cat and Spellbook Box is a box, so it has the little lift-the-lid pleasure that belongs to trinket boxes.

Skulls, cats and ravens

Skulls appear in Geode Skull Black Purple Gothic Glitter Skull Figurine and Count Archibald Steampunk Top Hat Skull. The black cat appears in Salems Spells Witches Familiar Black Cat and Spellbook Box.

The witch's familiar was a medieval and early-modern European folk belief in a spirit helper in animal form. Black cats became tied to that belief for their nocturnal, solitary habits, and the link hardened in the witch-hunt era.

Ravens have their little corner through Nevermore Lamp. Here, the folklore sits beside product names and shelf objects, not promises.

Choosing for someone else

For someone else, size and place are the kindest starting points. A wall plaque needs wall space, a lamp needs a corner, and a small skull or cat can sit on a shelf or desk.

The website is a limited selection of what is in the shop, and the shop has a lot more variety. If something has sold out online, give the shop a ring on 01424 439674 and we can help find other options.

A lamp, a wall plaque and a trinket box ask for different places at home. A small skull can sit beside books, while a wall hanging needs a clear patch of wall and a lamp needs a corner where its glow can be seen.
