Limited editions, year bears and the Best Friends Club

Charlie Bears collecting has its own little vocabulary: limited editions, numbered tags, year bears, Birthday Bears and retired bears. The words are simple once they are laid out on the counter, one swing tag at a time.

How limited editions are numbered

Only limited-edition Charlie Bears carry the bear's name and edition number on a neck tag. A sewn label confirms the maker.

The edition size depends on the range. The Isabelle Collection has limited editions of 200 to 500 pieces, with each bear coming with a numbered certificate of authenticity and a tote bag. The Plumo Collection is limited to 1,000 pieces worldwide for each character. A stockist gives Minimo edition sizes of roughly 600 to 2,000.

The Plush Collection is the core Charlie Bears range. Plush bears are mostly open editions, though some are numbered limited pieces. That is why two bears can sit in the same cabinet and follow rather different rules, even before anyone has read the little tag around the neck.

In June 2025, Charlie Bears launched Charlie's Julien Macdonald Signature Collection on QVC UK for the 20th anniversary. The first three characters in that collection, Cosmo, Miyaka and Feleena, are limited to 1,200 pieces each and individually numbered.

The Charlie Year Bear

The Charlie Year Bear is one bear a year with the same name and a new design. The 2026 edition is the 18th Charlie Year Bear. Each year's run is limited to 1,500 worldwide.

It is a neat little tradition: the name stays, the bear changes, and the year sits quietly beside it. The 2026 Charlie Year Bear belongs to the same long line as the earlier year bears, but has its own design for that year.

Goldenhands lists current Charlie Bears on the website, including year collections such as Charlie Bears New In 2026.

The Birthday Bear

The Birthday Bear is released each year on the company's own birthday. The 2023 Birthday Bear marked the 18th anniversary. One in twelve of the 2023 Birthday Bear was signed by Charlie.

That gives the Birthday Bear its own corner of the collecting cupboard. It is tied to the company's birthday rather than to the calendar year in quite the same way as the Charlie Year Bear.

The company itself began with Charlotte "Charlie" Morris and William Morris, and the first collection of 12 bears launched on 1 February 2006. The 2025/26 year is the company's 20th anniversary year.

The Best Friends Club

The collectors' club is called the Best Friends Club. UK membership is £20 a year and international membership is £25. The membership year runs from 1 May to 30 April, with no auto-renewal.

Members get free UK standard delivery from the company, a welcome gift, a ballot for exclusive bears, early sale access, a birthday card and a Christmas message from Charlie. The club also includes a newsletter called The Chronicle, a private Facebook group, and free entry to the Bearhouse Gallery in Launceston.

The club ballot is for exclusive bears, about six a year. It is one of those Charlie Bears details that sounds small until there is a name, a number and a new face peeping out from the shelf.

What retired means

"Retired" has a particular meaning in Charlie Bears collecting. It means the bear has sold out at the Bearhouse and stockists can no longer reorder it.

A retired bear is not the same thing as a numbered edition selling out. That little distinction matters, because a bear can be talked about by its edition size, its range, its year, or its retired status. The tag, label and paperwork help keep the story straight.

Goldenhands sells Charlie Bears at 30 George Street in Hastings Old Town. The website lists retired and rare Charlie Bears here: https://goldenhands.co.uk/collections/charlie-bears-retired-rare
